JOHN LEE HOOKER JR Sunday April 19th 2009 at 6pm....
John Lee Hooker Jr. was born in
Detroit "Motor" City with Delta blues-filled blood running through his Motown veins. The son of the great John Lee Hooker, he was exposed the life of the blues from a young age. At only eight years old Jr. performed on
Detroit's WJBK radio and knew from that moment that he wanted to follow the path of his father and become a world-class musician. Touring alongside Hooker, Sr. throughout his teens, Jr. had already performed in prestigious venues such as
Detroit's Fox Theatre with acclaimed musicians like Jimmy Reed by the time he was 16. In 1972, an eighteen year-old John Jr. was singing vocals alongside his father for the recording of Hooker, Sr.'s album Live at Soledad Prison (ABC Records).
Unfortunately, while living the "life of a bluesman" he succumbed to the demons that surround it, derailing his musical career for many, many years. Drugs, alcohol, divorce, incarceration, and death nearly brought his once promising career to a screeching halt, but it was living the blues and his faith in the Almighty that resurrected Jr. Hooker. With the support of his family and friends, and a crew of talented musicians who never ceased to believe in him, Jr. Hooker finally found his own inner muse, making music that expresses the depth of emotion he has experienced in his personal life.
MIGHTY MIKE SCHERMER Sunday January 18 2009 at 6pm...

|
"Mighty Mike Schermer is probably the best blues guitarist, singer and songwriter you've never heard of…and probably not for long!"
-Tommy Castro
"Every time I play with him my booty hurts afterwards from him kicking it all night!"
-Elvin Bishop
"Funky and authentic!" -Bonnie Raitt
Mighty Mike Schermer has been a fixture on the Bay Area Blues scene for over 20 years. In that span of time he has carved out a solid solo career, with two critically acclaimed CDs, an award winning single and thousands of performances at festivals and nightclubs the world over. He has also become the "go to guy" sideman for such heavyweights as Elvin Bishop, Bonnie Raitt, Charlie Musselwhite, Maria Muldaur, Howard Tate, Angela Strehli, Sista Monica, Shana Morrison and many, many more. Oh yes…we may be judged by the company we keep, but when the spotlight shines a solo artist also must be able to bring the goods all on his own. Mighty Mike Schermer delivers on all fronts.

Rick Estrin and The Nightcats Sunday February 8th 2009 at 6pm...
|
Rick Estrin ranks among the very best harp players in the blues world. His work on the reeds is at once deep in the tradition of harmonica masters Sonny Boy Williamson II and Little Walter Jacobs while at the same time pushing that tradition forward. The Associated Press called his harp playing, "endlessly impressive." The great guitarist Robert Lockwood, Jr. (who was schooled by Robert Johnson and who played on most of Little Walter’s Chess recordings) told Estrin, "Little Walter would be very proud of you."
For more than 30 years and nine albums, Rick fronted the jumping, swinging Little Charlie & The Nightcats, featuring guitarist Little Charlie Baty. But now, with Baty’s recent retirement from touring, Estrin -- along with the Nightcats longtime rhythm section of J. Hansen and Lorenzo Ferrell and fiery guitarist Kid Andersen -- is ready to take the lead on his own. Rick Estrin & The Nightcats’ sound, while still swinging the blues, is a harmonica-driven, rocking, guitar-fueled rave-up. The band performs the well-known, well-loved songs from Estrin’s massive catalog, and will introduce plenty of new material along the way. Rick’s seemingly effortless command of the harmonica is matched only by his soulful vocals and remarkable original songs.

JOHN NEMETH Sunday March 15th 2009 at 6pm...
"I remember telling friends up North in '80 that they should go see Stevie Ray Vaughan, but they weren't impressed because he wasn't famous yet. It will give me great pleasure to say, 'I told you so!' about John Németh. You'll see."
Bob Margolin, Blues Revue Magazine
Dec/Jan 2005
John Németh is a rising blues star; a singer steeped in the tradition and reminiscent of B.B. King, Ray Charles and Junior Parker, and a harmonica player of riveting intensity and virtuosity. His decade long career has found him opening for Robert Cray, Keb Mo', and Earl Thomas. MIGHTY MIKE SCHERMER BAND
In 2006 blues/rock legend Elvin Bishop hired Schermer on as his lead guitarist. The blending of their two unique styles has proved a tough combination to beat. Elvin's recent release The Blues Rolls On (2008) puts Mighty Mike side by side with some of the best guitarists in the business including Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks and even the king of the blues himself - B.B. King! Mike's extensive discography also includes recordings with Angela Strehli, Howard Tate, Sista Monica, Shana Morrison, Terry Hanck and many more. Finedog Records recently released a long awaited compilation CD, Right Hand Man Vol. 1, which chronicles Schermer's career alongside many of these top artists. That CD debuted at #4 on the Living Blues Radio Charts.

RICK ESTRIN AND THE NIGHTCATS
Tickets are $45.00.
Sunday, February 08, 2009
From 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Ever since he started performing his own material, it has become increasingly clear that Rick Estrin is a songwriter of unparalleled skill. His quick wit, coifed hair, pencil-thin mustache and sharp attire inform his songs in a way Cab Calloway, Louis Jordan, Willie Dixon and Elvis Presley would all be proud of. Blues Revue declared, "Estrin sits on one of the finest blues catalogs of any band on the planet. His carefully wrought lyrics penetrate human weakness with the precision of a boxer, though more often than not, he chooses to leave you laughing after the blow’s been struck." His songs have been favorably compared with those of Willie Dixon and the songwriting team of Leiber and Stoller.
Estrin won the 1993 Blues Music Award for his composition, My Next Ex-Wife and has written songs for a growing legion of famous fans. Three of his songs found their way onto Grammy-nominated albums: Don’t Put Your Hands On Me (from Koko Taylor’s Force Of Nature), I’m Just Lucky That Way (from Robert Cray’s Shame + A Sin), and Homely Girl (from John Hammond’s Trouble No More). Other artists who have covered Estrin songs include Little Milton, Rusty Zinn, Kid Ramos and Mark Hummel. "I like songs that tell stories," Rick says, "songs that are well-crafted and meaningful."
JOHN NEMETH Sunday March 15th 2009 at 6pm...
"Either John Németh is one of the greatest vocalists in the world or this was the best performance of his life, or both."
Bob Horn, Washington Blues Society
John's origins are an unlikely breeding ground for such an impressive blues talent. A thirty year old native of Boise, Idaho, he grew up singing in a Catholic church and started playing in local bands as a teenager.
"Hands down the toughest young harp player I've ever heard."
R.J. Mischo, 2002
Németh was a featured artist with Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets in 2005 and 2006 as well as a featured artist with The Junior Watson Band in 2002. The Cascade Blues Association selected Németh as a crowd favorite at the Portland Waterfront Blues Festival in 2002, and the Washington Blues Society called him the show stealer at the Winthrop Rhythm and Blues Festival in 2003. Greg Johnson of Blues Notes writes, "John Németh possesses rich harmonica tone that easily brings to mind Sonny Boy Williamson and Little Walter."
"Boy! John Németh can really belt it out!"
Charlie Musslewhite, 2004

JOHN LEE HOOKER JR.
Tickets are $45.00.
Sunday, April 19, 2009
From 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM
|
His first album, Blues with a Vengeance (Kent Records), is what he called his "celebratory redemption." After struggling through years of extreme hardship and nearly losing himself to the streets, the remarkable John Lee Hooker Jr. overcame the adversity to begin a rapid emergence into the blues spotlight. Released in April 2004, Blues with a Vengeance certainly lived up to its name by wrapping up 2004 with a Grammy nomination in the Traditional Blues Album category and a nomination for a distinguished W.C. Handy Award as Best New Artist Debut. The California Music Awards (formerly the BAMMYS) named Blues with a Vengeance 2004's Outstanding Blues Album of the Year, and the Bay Area Blues Society presented John Lee Hooker Jr. with the 2004 Comeback Artist of the Year award, as he performed alongside world-class musicians Jimmy Reed, BB King, Bo Diddley, Lenny Kravitz, Taj Mahal, Koko Taylor, Charlie Musslewhite, Etta James, and John Lee Hooker.
Cold As Ice, Jr. Hooker's second album, was released by Telarc Records in June of 2006 and showed his progression as a contemporary blues artist. Blending his roots with a modern sound, his style is indicative of his Motown base. Music enthusiasts describe his style as R&B, Jazz, Funk, and "down home blues". While the record did not gather as much attention as his debut, it received positive reviews across the board and solidified Jr. Hooker as one of blues' rising stars. Epitomizing the synthesis between traditional blues and the new age funk, the record at times pays homage to his father while at others it blazes a trail of its own.
As Jr. Hooker prepares for his third release, All Odds Against Me, he continues to carry blues into the 21st century. The 12-song album, to be released domestically on Jr. Hooker's own Steppin' Stone Records and in
Europe on Jazzhaus Records, is his first effort to include only new and original tracks, a contrast to either of his previous solo projects.
